Every year, Cleveland Public Theatre celebrates the start of their season with Pandemonium. In addition to the big blowout, the event also serves as a fundraiser for the theatre. Here's what we saw. Photos by Emanuel Wallace.

frontal start up ðŸ˜x8DðŸ˜x8DðŸ˜x8D

This past week has been a world wind for me and I am just now digesting the amazing experience of Cleveland Public Theatre’s (CPT) Pandemonium and how honored I am for the recognition as the Pan Award winner this year. I want to again thank everyone who came out for the event or who supported it in any way – I am profoundly grateful for the support. Oh, and we raised over $340,000 and sold more individual tickets than any previous Pandemonium! It was a beautiful night and the event had the largest total attendance of 1,500 people including guests, the amazing volunteers, and the incredible performers.

I have also appreciated the many positive comments I received about my remarks that evening which reflected the important message of community collaboration. Given the reality that many friends, colleagues and neighbors were not in attendance, I thought I would close my series of CPT blogs with the body of my remarks from the evening of September 7. *********

As many of you know, I returned to Cleveland about four and a half years ago after being away for almost 10 years. One of the first things I did was to participate in Leadership Cleveland. In addition to making great friends, I learned what is most important to this community and it shaped everything I have done since. I walked away with 5 personal priorities – Education, Diversity & Inclusion, and Economic Development (as the areas our community needed to focus on) and the Arts and Healthcare (as areas of strength that we need to continue to invest). I then joined boards and committee roles focused on each of them. Fast forward to the “ask” by CPT for me to be this year’s honoree. I began to do my homework and what I came to realize is that the mission and work of CPT align perfectly with my five priority areas. To continue my journey of awareness, I wrote 5 blogs – one on each of my priorities with emphasis on the linkage to CPT. I want to share just one of the learnings from each area that I thought would underscore why your attendance at Pandemonium and your support of CPT is so important.

Arts – CPT produces more new work than all professional theatres in Northeast Ohio combined and has created 55 World Premier productions over the past 10 years.

Education – CPT’s mission includes the words “life changing education programs” as a core principle. With education programming from after school programming for young children to programs for older students and adults, CPT reaches over 1000 people in our community annually through these programs

Diversity & Inclusion – Of this season’s performances, 75% are by female creators or female playwrights and 75% are by artists of color – simply an incredible commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Healthcare – Working with MetroHealth, CPT developed important programming to educate our community on the opioid epidemic and the stigma associated with that dependency.

Economic Development– CPT reimagined the possible by first envisioning what would become the Gordon Square Arts District and helped raise over $30m for the revitalization effort that brought over 75 new businesses to the district.

I hope you can understand from just those brief examples how impactful the work of CPT is for our community. At PwC, our purpose is to build trust in society and solve important problems and the impact of CPT in these areas is well aligned with our purpose and values.

I have had an amazing four and a half years back in Cleveland, due in large part to the people who I have met and the engagement I have had in the community. While the primary objective of Pandemonium is to celebrate CPT, I would also ask you to reflect on the theme of Alchemy which to me is more than about turning metal into gold – to me it’s about collaboration that makes the whole greater than the sum of the parts. I would ask everyone to reflect on how you can get more involved in the community because I do believe it is only when we come together at scale that we can make meaningful change.

I have never been more proud to be from Cleveland. I have never been more grateful to have been able to return to Cleveland and I have never been more excited to live in the City of Cleveland, right here on the near west side. Thank You.

While those comments reflect my look back at my time back here in Cleveland, I hope they also provide a framework for others to look forward. We have to look beyond our individual organizations, neighborhoods and projects to find ways to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. That’s my wish and my ask – thanks and let’s make Cleveland better together! Soul reaver sword.
